Nintendo DS and DSi Sell More Units in June Than All Home Consoles Combined

The Nintendo DS handheld gaming device was introduced to the gaming world in 2004. Its latest successor is the Nintendo DSi which comes with 2 multi-functional digital cameras. According to the NPD Group market research company, Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DS have together sold over 766,000 units in the US in June, a figure more than the total sales of all the present-generation consoles combined.

“More consumers continued to gravitate toward products that offer quality experiences and great value for the whole family. Consumers again selected Nintendo systems for those experiences, particularly our hand-helds,” commented Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive VP of Sales & Marketing.

Selling close to 362,000 units, Nintendo’s Wii has been the top selling home console in United States for 21 consecutive months. Approximately 374,000 Wii MotionPlus accessories were lapped up by fans of the franchise of which almost 205,000 were packaged with EA’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and 169,000 accessories were sold as stand alone.

Additionally, 4 games published for Nintendo consoles have managed to find their way on June’s top 10 best-sellers list for the US. With more than 289,000 units sold, EA Sports Active came in third, while at the fourth spot was Wii Fit with 271,000 copies sold. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 with Wii MotionPlus sold nearly 205,000 units to come in at number seven, while Mario Kart Wii sold more than 202,000 copies to reach the eight spot.

Other console makers will do well to up the ante as with astronomical sales figures like these, Nintendo is well on its way to attaining a global gaming monopoly. The hard part for the Japanese company would now be to maintain this commendable lead in a competitive gaming console market.
