Guild Wars 2 Headstart program Kicks off Today

Guild Wars 2 has been under development for five years, and while MMO fans will finally be able to lay their hands on the title on August 28, some will be able to jump into it as early as today. This is valid only for those who’ve pre-ordered the game.

A number of beta weekend events were being held by developer ArenaNet ever since April this year, and entry into the same was also granted to gamers who reserved their copies of this title. This PC exclusive acts as a sequel to 2005’s Guild Wars, and is claimed to kick in branching storylines, a feature uncommon to games from the MMORPG genre.

“Five years ago we set out to develop a game that finally fulfilled the promise of online worlds. We questioned everything that had previously been taken for granted and we never settled for ‘good enough’. Now, we’re finally ready to introduce Guild Wars 2 to gamers who are looking for the next evolution in online gaming,” revealed Mike O’Brien, president and co-founder of ArenaNet.

The events that will be simulated within the game’s environments will depend on players’ actions. And this will eventually force cooperation among them. Its new combat system is said to have been centered on timing, skill and movement. Two competitive modes will be included within. While one contains PvP combat, the other one is called WvW, and pits entire servers of players against each other over two-week’s time.

All those who’ve pre-ordered Guild Wars 2 can now start playing it, but those who haven’t will have to wait until August 28, 2012.
