Many gamers were excited when they learnt that a MMO based on the Marvel Comics universe was going to be made. However as time passed, it became unlikely that a Marvel MMO would be launched. Now MTV Multiplayer Blog is reporting that Shane Kim has confirmed that the Marvel Universe Online has been canned.
Shane Kim is the head of Microsoft Games Studio. He explained, “I’ll confirm. Marvel and we have agreed to end development on the MMO. It was an amicable decision…. It’s just something that we felt that, for us and for them, it would be better if we ended development. This is disappointing, because that had a lot of promise. But sometimes you have to make these decisions.”
Kim pointed to a whole bunch of factors and spoke on the business models for Marvel Universe Online. Besides speaking on the Marvel MMO, Shane Kim also mentioned games like Gears of War, Fable 2, Too Human and Alan Wake. He was quizzed about the sequel to Gears of War 2, but did not confirm the existence of the game.
