Sony’s PlayStation Portal Is A $199 Handheld With DualSence Features

PlayStation Portal

Sony’s Project Q which was first talked about in March this year has turned into the PlayStation Portal, a $199 handheld gadget with a screen that’s sort of fused to a DualSense controller.

Set to debut later this year, it works as an extension of the PS5 and requires the console to be on in order to work. And of course, the PlayStation Portal will also require a Wi-Fi connection to communicate with your PS5.

Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Platform Experience, Sony Interactive Entertainment, says “PlayStation Portal can play supported games that are installed on your PS5 console and use the Dualsense controller.”

The screen of this new handheld is an 8-inch LCD with a maximum resolution of 1080p, while its refresh rate is set at 60Hz. It comes with its own speakers but also bears a 3.5mm headphone jack. However, for wireless connections, only proprietary devices will be supported.

As for the controllers on both ends, they resemble the DualSense setup of the PS5 controller. They indeed feature the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback that the DualSense controller is known for. And if you’re wondering about its battery life, no information on that front has been revealed yet.

Interestingly, Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation Portal won’t be able to play any games that will be available on its upcoming cloud streaming service. “Games that must be streamed on PS5 using a PS Plus Premium membership are not compatible,” reads its statement.

That said, there’s no concrete release date to look forward to but we’ll have more on it when new details are out. For now, the PlayStation Portal looks like a rather interesting gadget for those who want to play their PS5 games remotely.
