HTC and Valve reveal Vive VR headset, coming later this year

The Vive VR headset built by HTC in close co-operation with Valve has just been unveiled to the world, and what’s interesting is that the gaming accessory will arrive in the market this year itself. Moreover, a developer edition of it is slated to be made available to participants during this spring, with a demonstration having been slated for next week’s Game Developers Conference. There’s no word whatsoever about what price this gadget will bear, but it’s a little premature right now to think about it anyway.

The Vive will connect to your PCs and let you play Steam games while offering 360-degree views of the action that’s unravelling on the screen. It has been equipped with a duo of 1200 x 1080 displays that are capable of refreshing at 90fps. The technology it has been built with helps the device in ‘eliminating jitter’ and achieving ‘photorealistic imagery’ according to what HTC has to say.

Its makers have also revealed that the Vive has been created with an aim of ‘letting you get up, walk around and explore your virtual space, inspect objects from every angle and truly interact with your surroundings.’ It will ship with a Steam VR base station which will let you walk in your environments instead of having to use the controller. HTC has equipped the gadget with a gyrosensor, an accelerometer and laser position sensor, which work together to track head movements as precisely as one-tenth of a degree.

Next week’s GDC event is where all eyes are peeled at the moment, as that’s when the HTC and Valve-developed VR headset is expected to be shown in action.
