Nvidia Project Shield marks company’s foray into handheld space, Tegra 4 introduced

The Nvidia Project Shield is an Android-based device unveiled by the company, which also kicks in its newest eye-grabber, the Tegra 4 processor – being touted as the world’s fastest mobile chipset. A 5-inch retinal multitouch display forms part of the handheld device which also comes equipped with an integrated controller and a sound system. And moreover, it will also be able to stream games from PCs powered by Nvidia GeForce GTX GPUs, allowing players to access their Steam library anywhere in the confines of their homes.

According to its maker, the Nvidia Project Shield has been created with the viewpoint that gaming should be open and flexible. It is thus that it has been infused with the PC functionality as well as its Android OS. The flip-opening retinal display housed by the machine is able to generate visuals on its 5 inched screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720p at 294dpi. Furthermore, the new Tegra 4 processor’s Direct Touch trait is said to enhance the screen’s touch responsiveness as well.

Device 1

Talking about the Tegra 4, this piece of technology too was a highlight of the company’s keynote at its CES press conference where the handheld was unveiled. This newest mobile-based chipset contains 72 custom Nvidia GeForce GPU cores which translate into six times the GPU horsepower of its predecessor, Tegra 3. It also carries a Cortex-A15 chip which enhances its capabilities even further. It is capable of delivering visuals on 4K ultra-high-definition displays, and for those worried about its battery-mongering habits, Nvidia has claimed that it consumes up to 45 percent less power than its precursor.

With such kind of technology at its heart, the handheld gaming console sure promises to be something out of the ordinary. Its other features include a Bass Reflex Portable Speaker System and access to Android apps such as Hulu, Netflix and Slacker Radio for movies and music. The company has even announced that leading developers are looking forward to support the handheld with their games. These include Ubisoft, Epic Games and Meteor Entertainment.

The Nvidia Project Shield price and release date information hasn’t been disclosed as yet. However, it is expected to ship later this year, so expect more information soon.
