Minecraft and Mojang to be Microsoft entities, deal worth 2.5 billion USD

The rumors were true indeed; Microsoft has found itself in the possession of Minecraft as well as Mojang, the studio responsible for the game. These two entities have been acquired by the Redmond-based giant in a deal that has reached a whopping 2.5 billion USD. The three heads of the company, Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, Carl Manneh and Jakob Porsér will immediately be leaving the company to pursue other projects, while the remaining staff will merge with Microsoft Studios.

Rumors about this possible acquisition were going around since quite a few days, but the deal has finally been made official now. Microsoft has assured fans that the company’s strength in cloud and mobile technologies will make Minecraft a ‘richer and faster’ experience than it already is. Additionally, the game will also be treated with more powerful development tools, while there will even be new opportunities to connect across the massive Minecraft community.

The main question of what will happen to other versions of the title apart from the Xbox and PC ones has also been answered by Microsoft. The studio will continue to make the game available across all the platforms on which it can be played today. These include PC, iOS, Android, Xbox and PlayStation. This means the upcoming PS4 and PS Vita versions of the game will be released without any hitches.

For those unaware, Minecraft is a simple sandbox game that allows you to build constructions out of textured cubes in a procedurally generated world. It was created by just one person – Notch – who later co-founded Mojang to handle further development.
