Microsoft nearing deal to snap up Minecraft-maker Mojang for 2 billion USD

If all goes as is being speculated, then Mojang, the studio responsible for creating the immensely popular Minecraft, could well find itself in the hands of Microsoft. And all this could happen this week itself according to a report which has also revealed that the Xbox-maker is ready to shell out a whopping sum of 2 billion USD for the purchase. As one would expect, there’s no official word from both the supposedly involved parties on the matter.

Mojang

According to Eurogamer, The Wall Street Journal has somehow acquired details about talks that are apparently going on between the two concerned parties. Mojang’s 2 billion USD evaluation is particularly shocking owing to the fact that it has only released one mainstream game till date, while two others are under slow development. But there’s no denying the ability of the studio, since Minecraft has become so hugely popular since its launch that it has managed to sell more than 54 million copies till date.

The sandbox game was initially built by Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, a high profile Swedish programmer who heads Mojang. As its name suggest, Minecraft asks gamers to mine its 3D procedurally generated sandbox world to find things in order build structures. This award-winning game is available on a number of different platforms, and is also slated to arrive for the PS4 and the PS Vita sometime soon.

If Microsoft succeeds in buying Mojang for whatever massive sum of money, the fate of those two PlayStation versions of Minecraft will definitely need to be considered.
