Destiny revealed by Bungie as a shared world shooter

Halo-creator Bungie has finally taken the veil off Destiny, its new gaming vision of sorts which is being described as a shared world shooter. This completely new franchise forms part of a 10-year publishing deal that the company has struck with Activision. It is a console shooter, and has hence been announced for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

PC as a platform is out of the question for now, but there’s still hope that it could make its way to the Wii U. Also, it is extremely likely that the game would be made available for next-gen machines, including the yet unannounced PS4 and the Xbox 720.

Bungie had held a reveal event for Destiny yesterday, at which IGN was present, and the website has enlightened us with all the details about this project. It works as a shared world shooter. Now, as this wasn’t a complete gameplay reveal, we can’t say much about this genre, but there are a few ideas floating around.

It will be sort of an MMO, with gamers being able to play it solo or in small co-op groups. The experience will also be integrated into smartphones, as showcased in the video documentary posted in the space below.

A big shocker is that it will require an always-on Internet connection on consoles. There are a few unique possibilities which will be rendered by this. If players within proximity of each other enter quest areas and towns, they will be matched together by the game. Story details about the title remain the same as the leaked ones we had published in November last year.

The post-apocalyptic Earth has a patch of civilization that is saved by a moon-like entity called Traveler that hovers over it. As humans are recovering from the disaster, they have just started venturing out into the galaxy once again, but are being threatened for their existence by enemies present on the Earth.

Gamers will apparently be able to travel to any planet in our solar system. They will be assuming the role of a Guardian, and will be allowed to choose between at least three classes – Titan (with big guns), Hunter (with sniper rifles) and Warlock (magic). There are still no official screenshots of it, but eager fans can have a look at its concept art.

Wrapping it up, Bungie seems to have taken a completely new direction with Destiny, and if that’s not enough evidence of what we can expect from next-gen consoles, what else is? For now, it has only been announced for the PS3 and Xbox 360. However, we can anticipate fresh information rolling in when the PS4 (Orbis) and the Xbox 720 (Durango) are made official.
