VGX: New announcements, Game of Thrones, Tomb Raider and much more

This year’s VGX Awards (previously called Spike Video Game Awards) had Telltale Games written all over them, with the expected announcement of an adventure-based Game of Thrones title developed by the studio coming in, alongside other big ones. These include a Borderlands spin-off from Telltale, the previously rumored Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition and Joe Danger maker Hello Games’ new offering No Man’s Sky.

The much awaited announcement of the new episodic Game of Thrones title came as quite a pleaser for fans of Telltale and the book or TV series it’s based on. Nothing apart from a teaser has been revealed as yet however. This title is more likely to tie into the story of the Game of Thrones TV series rather than the books, since it’s teaser has incorporated the music and art of the hit show, and has also revealed that the developers are working on the title along with HBO. It is slated for a 2014 release.

The second game which Telltale announced is a spin-off to the much loved Borderlands series. Dubbed Tales from the Borderlands, it won’t feature any of the vault hunters who formed part of the previous games. There’s no word on when it will be released though. No Man’s Sky is the name of Hello Games’ fresh new offering which is a first-person sci-fi action adventure title. See it for yourself in the trailer we’ve posted below.

And then there’s the much rumored Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition which is nothing but a next-gen version of one of last year’s most acclaimed titles. This edition of the game will be launched for the PS4 and the Xbox One in January 2014, and will feature better graphics, including new animations for Lara’s face, as well as all previously released DLC. Kinect voice controls will indeed form part of the Xbox One version, while the PS4 variant will light up your controller when Lara’s using the torch.

Apart from these big announcements, the VGX Awards also saw publishers revealing new videos of their upcoming titles. These included videos of Witcher 3, Titanfall, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, The Division and more. As for the awards, GTA V was dubbed as Game of the Year, while Naughty Dog took home Studio of the Year. Here’s the complete list of all the winners.
