Crytek Turning into Free-to-Play Studio post Crysis 3

In a somewhat shocking revelation made on the final day of E3, Crytek boss Cevat Yerli disclosed that the developer will only be creating free-to-play games following the release of Crysis 3. The decision to do so apparently comes due to Yerli’s belief that DLC and premium gaming services are ”˜milking customers to death.’

In an interview with VideoGamer, he has confirmed that Warface will be the studio’s first free-to-play venture. This PC game was revealed for the first time in 2010, and features multiplayer first-person shooter gameplay. But even after this game, the developer won’t be coming back to usual mainstream titles, as it will only concentrate on creating free-to-play titles for its Gface social platform.

“As is evident in Warface, our approach is to ensure the best quality, console game quality. That implies budgets of between 10m USD to 30m USD – so no compromise there – but at the price-point of 0 USD entry. I think this is a new breed of games that has to happen to change the landscape, and be the most user-friendly business model,” CEO and President of Crytek, Cevat Yerli told the website.

Crysis 3 will be launched for multiple platforms in February next year. This third installation to the much loved FPS series features a story that is set in New York. It begins when protagonist Prophet returns to the city only to find out that it has been enclosed in a giant Nanodome created by the corrupt Cell Corporation.

The first free-to-play game from Crytek will come in the form of Warface which is yet to be blessed with a released date.
