StarCraft II Scam to Steal your Battle.net Account?

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the real time strategy game from Blizzard Entertainment generating much hype and the sequel to the 1998 video game StarCraft, held in high respects by most RTS gamers. The game released towards the end of last month and is available in standard and collector’s editions. In addition, the game is also available in the form of a digital download from Blizzard.

And it seems that all the hype surrounding StarCraft II is being used against it. Apparently a few “unscrupulous characters” have initiated an attempt to steal Battle.net accounts, taking advantage of the popularity of the game. And Siliconera reports on how to identify this threat and protect yourself from this scam.

It seems that e-mails are being circulated, which promise a StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty CD-key if certain instructions, included in the e-mails, are followed. Apparently each e-mail comes with a deceptive receipt and a link to a fake Battle.net login screen which doesn’t contain battle.net in the URL. The malicious e-mails seem to guide you to create a Battle.net account or log in to an existing one, verify your e-mail address and enter the CD-key given.

The website warns all Battle.net account holders to be very cautious towards e-mails which do not come directly from Blizzard.
