Some time ago Sony announced that the much anticipated upcoming action title Uncharted 2: Among Thieves had gone gold, and that the company would be hosting a few “sneak peak” events. Now we have word that Sony has joined up with movie theatres across the USA in order to bring to gamers a series of unique multiplayer gaming events. These events highlight the potential of, what the company calls “alternate content”, as a source of revenue during non-peak times.
The “sneak peak” events will be brought by Sony Computer Entertainment of America and Sony Digital Cinema Solutions and Services, to support the release of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves for the PS3. Those who attend these events will have a chance to play the game on the big screen, powered by Sony Electronics 4K digital cinema technology.
“Sony 4K digital cinema technology delivers an enhanced viewing experience unlike anything seen in theaters before,” stated Mike Fidler, senior vice president of Sony Electronics’ Digital Cinema Solutions and Services Group. “But it also offers exhibitors additional programming options from alternative content such as gaming events, simulcasts, pre-recorded concerts, and sporting events, to maximize a movie theater’s profitability and fill auditoriums during non-peak times.”
Fidler believes that these types of in-theatre gaming events offer an unprecedented out-of-home experience. “As a total entertainment company, Sony is able to draw upon resources across its professional, consumer and content groups to create diversity and value for consumers and a practical solution for exhibitors,” Fidler added.
The “sneak peak” events will be held on October 5, 2009 and October 6, 2009 between 6 and 11 pm. The theatres which will be hosting the events are the Landmark Embarcadero in San Francisco, California, Muvico Theaters in Rosemont, Illinois, Muvico Theaters in Thousand Oaks, California, and in the Lincoln Square Cinemas in Bellevue, Washington.
