BioShock franchise has managed to sell off 25 million copies

News that has just been outed is that the ever so enchanting BioShock franchise has managed to trade off more than 25 million copies worldwide. A huge share in this number is grabbed by the latest entry into the series, BioShock: Infinite which has sold off a whopping 11 million copies since its release in March 2013.

Take-Two Interactive’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick has disclosed news about the BioShock series to GameSpot at the Technology, Media and Telecom Conference in New York. He has also revealed that the franchise still remains a ‘really important’ IP for the company.

He has felt the need to say this owing to the troubled times that the main development studio for these games has gone through lately. Despite the success of BioShock Infinite following its release, Irrational Games let go of almost its entire staff, managing to retain just 15 of them.

Creative director Ken Levine then announced that the studio itself is ‘winding down’ in favor of a ‘small, more entrepreneurial endeavour.’ Since Take-Two still owned the BioShock IP, it handed over the development duties to 2K, and since then there has been no news of a new entry to the much loved series.

The first ever title from the franchise was launched back in 2007, and earned extreme popularity owing to its unique gameplay and its strong narrative. A direct sequel was then introduced in the form of BioShock 2 in 2010, while BioShock Infinite gave the series a whole new setting in 2013.

With the BioShock franchise having sold 25 million copies, there’s no doubt that its makers will want to come up with a new entry to the series. It now remains to be seen when they are ready to talk about it.
