Wolfenstein: The New Order coming out this year, is cross-gen

Wolfenstein: The New Order, the long-awaited entry to the franchise which helped shape the first-person shooter genre, has been announced by Bethesda to have been slated to arrive during Q4 of this year. Upon its launch, it will be made available for platforms that include the Xbox 360, PS3, PC as well as ‘next-generation consoles.’ Its debut trailer is out now, but it doesn’t give away much. We’ve embedded it in the space below for fans to grab a glimpse of the title.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Rumored to be under development since a long time, this new offering has its story set during 1960. Bethesda, the series’ new publisher had released a tease regarding the game yesterday, before it finally got revealed through GameSpot. According to the said website, it transpires in an alternate history universe wherein the Nazis have won World War II. The protagonist from previous games, B.J. Blazkowicz returns in this entry as a playable character.

This American war hero has his hands full, for he has been asked to spearhead an ‘impossible counter-offensive’ against the Nazi powers that have taken over the world. The game will take place all across Europe it seems, as players will be required to break into Nazi strongholds while battling hordes of armies who are trying to make use of ‘super weapons’ which the Nazis are using to dominate earth ‘and beyond.’

As had been pointed out by past rumors, the development duties are being handled by a new studio dubbed MachineGames. It is building the game using id Software’s id Tech 5 engine which was witnessed by us in 2011’s Rage, and will also be seen in 2014’s The Evil Within. MachineGames, a wholly owned subsidiary of Zenimax, is composed of mostly former Starbreeze employees who’ve worked on projects like The Darkness and Chronicles of Riddick.

Technically, this will be the ninth installment to the massive franchise which has its roots set in 1981’s classic Apple II game. The latest entrant to it had come out in 2009 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Embracing single-player as well as multiplayer gameplay, it managed to grab mostly fair reviews for its offerings.

Wolfenstein: The New Order will be ready to ship later this year for the PS3, Xbox 360, PC as well as next-gen consoles which could mean the PS4, the next Xbox or even the Wii U for that matter.
