Doom 4 Not Cancelled Says Bethesda

Quite some drama has been surrounding Doom 4 lately ever since a large batch of its supposed screenshots surfaced on the web. Along with these images also came the news that the game has been cancelled, but Bethesda was quick put these rumors to rest by saying that it is indeed working on the title currently.

Yesterday, Joystiq received official confirmation from the publisher about the game. But the company has stayed clear of commenting on the leaked screenshots, perhaps indicating that they just might be real ones. Announced for the first time in 2008, this iteration to the extremely popular series has been under development by id Software ever since.

“Doom 4 isn’t cancelled. When we’re ready to talk about it and show it off, we’ll let everyone know,” Pete Hines, VP of PR and Marketing, Bethesda appears to have told the website.

This new game is expected to be developed using id Software’s famed id Tech 5 engine which delivered some exhilarating visuals in last year’s Rage. The Doom series has been around since 1993 when the first game was launched for MS-DOS computers. A number of different titles have followed this offering, the last major entrant among them being Doom 3 which was released for Windows and Linux in 2004 and for Mac and Xbox in 2005. Furthermore, 2011 also saw the source code of the game being released by the developer.

Very few details about Doom 4 are available currently, but news about the game still being under development will definitely come as a breather to fans of the series.
