Today we’re taking a look back in time for some best 2 player SNES games. The console from Nintendo brought in various improvements over the NES system, more specifically 16-bit graphics over 8-bit. And along with the new console came hordes of fresh releases. In this compilation, we’re going to open up those archives and relive some of the most enjoyable title that are fun to play co-operatively.

1. Super Bomberman 2:

Super Bomberman 2 was release back in 1994 and it has some highly addictive gameplay. In single-player mode, you enter various mazes filled with monsters and walls which can be destroyed by placing bombs near them. The goal is to open the gate to the next level by killing all of the monsters. There are various useful items hidden around the maze.

The main highlight of the franchise is the Battle Mode where you and friends can fight it out to the finish in free for all and team battles. Here, various new items are available including gloves that allow you to toss around bombs and boots which provide a speed boost. Once you’ve gotten the hang of things, you’ll be able to quickly move around and outsmart your opponents.

Contra III: The Alien Wars has a futuristic setting and it takes place during the year 2636. The earth is being invaded by aliens in a war where the survival of mankind is at stake. You set out to stop the invasion by running through levels and killing enemies. Unlike previous releases, this one tags along new types of levels where you can ride missiles and chase in bikes.

Additionally, you are now permitted to carry two weapons instead of just one. And when you die, you only lose the one that was in use. Various upgrades will be available throughout levels. Speaking of which, there are more top-down view environments and you’ll be treated to three difficulty modes which alter the attack strength of bosses based on selection.

3. Zombies Ate My Neighbors!:

Zombies Ate My Neighbors

The Monkey Island series isn’t the only popular franchise from LucasArts. Back in the day, the SNES title Zombies Ate My Neighbors earner a lot of popularity over the course of time and it even spawned sequels and spin-offs. While the single player mode is a lot of fun, co-op gameplay is even more enjoyable. The goal here is to navigate through various locations like castles, malls, streets and many more killing not only zombies, but many types of creatures like aliens, vampires, huge worms and more.

There are 55 levels in total and you complete an environment by collecting a certain number of survivors. To defeat the enemies, you’ll get different types of weapons like soda cans that explode, lawnmowers, dishes, tomatoes and fire extinguishers amongst others.

4. Goof Troop:

Goof Troop is an action adventure title that was release back in 1993 based on the animated TV show of the same name. The game features Goofy and Max as playable characters where either one can be selected in single-player mode or both for co-op. Where the story is concerned, the father-son duo set out for a fishing trip only to find that a pirate ship has kidnapped Pete and PJ.

After following the ship to its island, the characters attempt to find their friends and rescue them. There are 5 environments in total here and to proceed to different levels, you’ll have to solve puzzles and defeat pirates as well as other enemies. Boss attacks take place at the end of each environment.

5. Super Smash TV:

Super Smash TV was originally launched for arcade systems over two decades back and it was latest ported over to multiple consoles including the NES, SNES and Genesis. The title is set in a game show where players take on the challenge of defeating enemies in exchange for various prizes and with their lives at stake. You basically step into various rooms and enemies swarm the place from all sides.

The objective is to shoot all enemies to unlock the next level. Various upgrades and items are spawned as you kill opponents, providing you with better weapons, protection and more. Additionally, there’s a bonus level available which can be accessed only if players managed to collect a certain amount of keys.

6. Super Mario Kart:

The Mario Kart series has some of the most preferred two-player titles for almost all Nintendo-made hardware and the franchise’s success dates back to 1992 where it made its debut on the SNES console as Super Mario Kart. If you’re new to the series, you basically race around circuits in different types of vehicles. You’ll be able to control eight characters from the original Mario series.

There are several game modes available. In single player, you get Mario Kart GP and Time Trial, while multiplayer offers Match Race and Battle Mode in addition to GP but without AI units. Additionally, for two player gameplay, the screen is split in half horizontally.

Super Mario World is the fifth installment in the series and it’s the launch title for the SNES console. The game follows Mario and Luigi who set out for a vacation to Dinosaur Land. Once there, they find out that Princess Toadstool has been kidnapped and dinosaurs have been encased in eggs. They then journey to restore order to the land and stop the antagonist Bowser.

The platformer features the same mechanics used in previous releases, but new elements have been introduced such as the ability to float with help from an item and different types of jumps. In multiplayer mode, both players can co-operatively run through levels together instead of taking turns.
