7 Games Like MechWarrior

There are some great games like MechWarrior out there waiting to be played. Many believe that the Mech franchise is dead and whatever new launches take place fall short. Well, not all have turned out into disappointment, certainly not the title in question. So, we’ve gone and found releases that share similarities with the one in question. We’ve even prepared a comprehensive list of such titles below, so go ahead and have a look.

1. Hawken:

If there anything keeping the Mech franchise alive, it’s the newly launched Hawken for PC. Shredding robots into bit and pieces is what you can expect from this title along with fast-paced action and beautiful graphics. Speaking of which, the developed has utilized the Unreal Engine 3 to create this addition. The gameplay basically involves combat between different types of Mechs in wastelands.

Played in first-person perspective, you control the machine from the cockpit. Robots come in different categories and sizes and you’ll also be able to customize them with different weapons and items. Hawken is multiplayer only and it currently offer team deathmatch and free-for-all modes, with more scheduled for launch in the future.

2. Armored Core V:

From Software’s Armored Core series has been around from the late 90’s and titles have been released for multiple platforms over the years including the PS1, PS3, PSP and Xbox 360 amongst others. The latest addition came about in 2012 and is available for current generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft. The setting here is a futuristic post-apocalyptic war where you fight in various locations that are now wastelands due to conflicts.

Natural resources are now depleted and you fight for territorial control. Armored Core V has 9 story missions in total and it supports 10-player matches for multiplayer. Mechs here are fully upgradable from the head piece to the core to arms to legs to weapons and there are over 500 items to choose from.

3. Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire:

Next up on our games similar to MechWarrior roster comes from the long running anime and manga, Mobile Suit Gundam. Crossfire is exclusive to Sony’s PS3 console and it was released back in 2006. The plot here is set during the One Year War, UC 0079. If you’re familiar with the anime, you’ll be presented with various known suits from the Earth Federation and the Zeon forces. Also, you can choose sides here by joining either fraction.

One of the main highlights here is the damage system where specific parts of the armor can be destroyed which leads to certain consequences like immobility when the feet are damaged or no vision if your head gets blown off. Mechs are customizable and you play in third-person view.

4. Steel Battalion:

Ever wanted to get the feeling that you’re in complete command of your Mech? Well, not many titles offer this capability, but Steel Battalion for the original Xbox lets you do everything from powering up the machine and its software, to flipping switches to getting the system online, to changing gears to move faster and even manually ejecting from your Mech. To make all these possible, Camcom released the game with its own 40-button controller which includes two joysticks for movement and weapons control.

The latest addition to the series, Heavy Armor, brings in similar features but it requires you to control your machine by interacting with the Kinect sensor through gestures.

5. Zone of the Enders HD Collection:

Zone of the Enders

We’ve got a relaunched classic on our MechWarrior alternatives collection, Zone of the Enders HD. This package bundles not only the original, but also the second installment, both of which were available on the PS2. The new release is available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It also introduces richer graphics, better audio and updated interfaces, augmenting the overall experience.

The gameplay remains the same as the originals. The first title takes place in the late 22nd century where humanity has inhabited Mars and conflicts between the Earth and its neighbor begin to surface.

6. Trenched/Iron Brigade:

Trenched which is now known as Iron Brigade is one of the finest titles you’ll find in this segment in the past few years. Double Fine has delivered this release for the Xbox 360 as well as Windows and not only will it fulfill your Mech desires, but also deliver tower defense elements into the gameplay.

Where the story mode is concerned, the title doesn’t take place in the future, rather it has an historic setting which is post WW1. Players take control of Trench armors to defeat the Monovisions from invading Europe, Africa, and the Pacific. For better defense, you can call for Emplacements which is made possible by collecting the remains of the dead Monovisions. There are numerous customization options made available for the Trench suits.

7. Chromehounds:

Chromehounds is another title developed by From Software on our games similar to MechWarrior array. Launched back in 2006 for the Xbox 360, it takes place in an alternative universe where players control HOUND robots. The battle here is for the region of Neroimus and there are a total of 6 playable missions.

Gameplay is in third-person perspective and the graphics are pretty decent for its time, albeit the action is a bit slow. The multiplayer campaign was one of the key features of this game. However, as of 2010, Sega has pulled the plug on its online services. The single player storyline is still accessible and can be completed entirely.
