Candles

Are you afraid of the dark? Well, that’s mainly what you’ll find in Candles. This horror title doesn’t possess any sort of violence or paranormal beings. Instead, it gives you the chills through simple sound effects and darkness. Here’s how the story goes – You find out that your house has been invaded by imps while you were away.

The goal here is to drive them away by lighting candles all over the place and also making sure they remain lit throughout the night. You can permanently get rid of all imps by starting the generator located in the cellar, but if all lights go off, it’s game over.

2. Anna:

Anna

Next on our games similar to Slender lineup is Anna, a mystery and puzzle solving horror title. Here, you play as an amnesiac man who dreams of a deserted sawmill located in the Italian mountains. He then sets out to find the reason behind his dreams and the voice of Anna that keeps calling out to him. You will need to uncover secrets of your past by solving puzzles and collecting clues.

What’s really interesting about the title is that the storyline isn’t linear and your actions will not only affect the mental state of the character, but also progress the narrative in different ways like revealing new secrets and changing locations. That’s not all – There are a total of eight endings which gives this release high replay value. Earlier this year, an Extended Edition version was launched which has improved graphics, fresh locations, an improved interface and more hours of playing.

Price: $9.99

3. Hide:

Hide

Would you believe us if we told you that a game designed with Minecraft-like graphics and high-quality audio will manage to scare you? Well, you’ll just have to try out Hide and see for yourself. Developed as part as a competition on Super Friendship Club, this release is rather small and it won’t take much of your time to complete (15 to 20 minutes, maybe).

The goal here is to wander around in a forest and find 5 locations. With each new place you find, something will start following you and attempt to kill you. The combination of pixilated graphics and really creepy as well as realistic sounds makes this one really enjoyable.

4. Dream of the Blood Moon:

Dream of the Blood Moon

What puts Dream of the Blood Moon on our list of slender alternatives is its direct inspiration from the title in question. Additionally, you can also expect to find a very similar experience. Designed over a period of two months, the title takes place in a very spooky forest that’s created with beautiful 3D visuals and sound effects.

Here, you have to collect six tear drops by solving puzzles and bring them back to a tree, all without being caught by demons. The audio is one of the most important elements of the title and it’s needed for completion of all objectives. Finding tears will be time-consuming and you will need a bit of patience. Also, you play in first-person view.

5. Amnesia: The Dark Descent:

From an intriguing storyline to beautiful graphics to some pretty scary audio, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is one of the finest survival horror titles we’ve played over the years. The story follows Daniel who finds himself in the Prussian Brennenburg Castle with no memory apart from his name and where he stays.

The objective here is to explore the castle and find notes which were written by the protagonist before losing his memory. Throughout the story, you’ll encounter monsters and the Shadow. The only way of surviving here is by running or hiding. Also, there are three possible ending based on your actions in-game.

6. Eyes:

Eyes

Would you enter a haunted house with nothing more than a flashlight just for twenty bags of money? Eyes will put you in such a situation and unlike most other games similar to Slender, this one requires strategic planning when dealing with ghosts. Eye collectibles are scattered across the house and with them, you’ll be able to temporarily see what the ghost is looking at and even its path, giving you enough time to plan an escape or more around without being caught.

Additionally, during the presence of spirits, funny stuff starts to happen like furniture moving around the place and scary groans which basically means you need to out of there. Oh, you’ll find ‘Run’ written in bright red as well, to alert you. Money bags and ghosts are randomized on each run.

7. Nightmare House 2:

The last addition for today isn’t a standalone release like the others, but a mod for Half-Life 2. The title has been designed with the Source Engine from Valve and it’s the sequel to the original release which takes off from where the latter left. Set in the Never Lose Hope hospital, you take on the role of a lost and confused person with no memory of how you landed up there.

Well, the girl from the original is back and haunting you as you attempt to escape the nightmare. The title is available for free, albeit you’re going to need a copy of Half-Life 2 to play it.
