Hottest Gaming News of the Month: May 2010

There were many huge announcements and happenings in the month of May leading up to this year’s E3. Just as the big reveal last month was the Gears of War 3 announcement, this month’s shocker came in the form of the Killzone 3 announcement. We also had a few more noteworthy announcements, a few big game releases, and a Wii announcement sure to bring a smile to anyone bashful towards the console.

May 2010 Video Games

One of the biggest announcements in the month of May was the one about Killzone 3. A few game details were also shared including the fact that the game will be playable in 3D and will feature jetpacks for more diverse combat. A release date or time frame was not revealed, but maybe we’ll hear something at this year’s E3. Another huge announcement was that Halo: Reach was given a global release date. The game will deliver a prequel experience to the series, but surprisingly feature better technology than in past titles, which occur in the future, in terms of the series. Halo: Reach is scheduled to release on September 14, 2010.

Sticking with major announcements, we arrive at LittleBigPlanet 2. The game was officially announced by SCEA’s PR Manager, Eric Levine on the PlayStation Blog soon after rumors emerged that the game would be announced in the June issue of Game Informer. LBP2 will have a ton of features including the ability for users to design and create not just levels but entire mini-games and backwards compatibility with all levels fashioned online in LBP. The game will have a new graphics engine and is set for a winter 2010 release. Rounding up the announcements in the month of May was Konami’s overhauled Pro Evolution Soccer 2011.

Wii fans can rejoice as all new Wii consoles now come bundled with a Wii Sports disc, a Wii Sports Resort disc, as well as Nintendo’s MotionPlus accessory for the console. Furthermore, the black Wii is now available in the Americas, news enough for Wii fans to take delight in. Shifting focus a bit, Obsidian Entertainment’s espionage RPG Alpha Protocol went gold in May 2010, after being pushed back from its initial October 2009 scheduled release.

With the World Cup approaching fast, it was good news for football simulation video game fans as EA Sports released the official video game for the World Cup, 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. The game lets you take the fight to the international level and has a few interesting new features sure to captivate those who loved FIFA 10. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the title come complete with eight new celebrations with the sports game also unleashing onto other platforms like the Wii, PSP, iPhone and iPod Touch.

In other release news that occurred in the month of May, Remedy’s action thriller about a writer who retreats to a mysterious town looking to spark some creativity, Alan Wake saw the light of day. There is even a Limited Collector’s Edition for the die hard thriller fan. Also, Super Mario Galaxy 2 launched exclusively for the Wii. The game is a sort of sequel to Super Mario Galaxy and pack new levels, power-ups and playable characters.
