Sleeper Hits of 2008: Brutal Legend, InFamous and Borderlands

Sleeper Hits of 2008

Another month to go before some of the biggest names in the community make one of their most stellar and anticipated comebacks. Snake’s family saga over a nuclear equipped Mech is deemed to finally get an ending (?), Liberty City welcomes you back with open arms and let’s crime take its toll.

Final Fantasy hits XIII, Ryu’s back with gore, vengeance and violence, and the Super Smash series is all set to be a smashing hit, this list goes on and on and on and on. But what happens to games that have not exactly been under the spotlight and are yet gearing up to become one of the best gaming experiences in years to come. These games have not exactly been picked up by the marketing scanner to propel them into unimaginable heights.

Brutal Legend (PS3, Xbox 360): There is no need for any introduction to Tim Schafer’s game on Heavy Metal meeting a fantasy world, inspired by a Megadeth roadie. Eddie Riggs might have been an ordinary Metal road junkie but a fantasy mishap lands him up in a world where Humanity is enslaved by demons whose gods are the greatest metal titans ever!!! Dude this seems so fricking rad, the action/gameplay elements seem equally impressive, face melting solo, axe slinging hot rod action, and visuals like Tim Burton’s movies all set in a completely mystifying world of ancient Norse and heavy metal. Psychonauts might have not been so commercially successful but this game puts all the nuts in the groove to give players some wild head banging action adventure till date. Oh yeah and since the game has been inspired by a Megadeth roadie, how can Metallica be left out, a character called “Lars” has quite a role to play in the game.

InFamous (PS3): Now that’s what I call a sucker’s punch. It’s surprising that this is one of those studios that have never quite been appreciated by too many people. Naughty Dog and Insomniac seem to hog the entire spotlight. Sly Cooper had some truly innovative platforming elements that rivaled any of the major platforming games but it did not quite get an applause that it actually deserved. The studio’s finally back in giving the world a completely unique sandbox experience with InFamous, best described as Psi-ops Meets GTA. The game has a completely unique experience to offer with open ended gameplay. This game is not to be missed out under any circumstances.

Borderlands (PS3, Xbox 360 & PC): Welcome to the next generation of Diablo. Utilizing a revolutionary system that features over half a million guns, combined with vehicular combat, co-op modes and reeling levels of addiction, Gearbox Software calls this game a first person shooter that meets Deadwood’s grit Mad Max’s vehicles. This game might have mechanics quite similar to Fallout 3 but is vividly different in every possible way, as Randy Pitchford puts it “You can take every shooter in this entire generation on the 360. All of the weapons every one of them has, add them together and this game has more – Two orders of magnitude more”. I’d say people are actually going to die trying to complete this game especially with its randomly generated dungeons.
