Here’s your regular fill of gaming controversy – the makers of Fortnite have announced a limited-time Imposters Mode for the game and it’s eerily similar to Among Us. Naturally, there is chatter regarding the ethical nature of this decision, with developers of the deduction game having made their displeasure very clear on social media.
The Fortnite Imposters mode is live now. It places up to ten players inside a submarine, with eight of them being agents and two, imposters. Each of the players is assigned tasks that need completion. Like in Among Us, the imposters are tasked with sabotaging the facility and eliminating agents. They are even allowed to teleport players to cover their tracks and disable assignments.
The similarities with Among Us don’t end there. Agents can report eliminated agents at any time by calling for discussions. They can share their information at these discussions via emotes in a quick-chat menu, as they try to accuse suspicious candidates and get them ejected from the submarine.
The Fortnite Imposters mode hasn’t quite gone down well with folks involved in the development of Among Us and they have responded as much with statements as with funny memes. Among Us community director Victoria Tran said on Twitter, “Like game mechanics fine, those shouldn’t be gatekept, but at the very least even different themes or terminology makes things more interesting?”

InnerSloth co-founder Marcus Bromander also spoke on Twitter saying, “We didn’t patent the Among Us mechanics. I don’t think that leads to a healthy game industry. Is it really that hard to put 10% more effort into putting your own spin on it though?”
The Fortnite Imposters mode is live now in the game and developers of the battle royale offering haven’t yet spoken about the controversy.
