Shenmue 3 gets the funding it deserves as its Kickstarter closes

The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter campaign has ended, and has managed to raise an unbelievable sum of $6.33 million thanks to 69320 backers. The Makers of this much anticipated game had originally asked for just $2 million in crowd-funding, but the extreme fandom for the series had led to that goal being achieved in just eight hours of the project going live.

This of course prompted the developers to come up with several stretch goals, as a result of which the game kept on receiving new features. It’s hence that Shenmue 3 will now come with additional quests, expanded areas, a skill tree and a rapport system as well.

This action-adventure offering has become the highest funded video game on Kickstarter. Previously, this record was held by Koji Igarashi’s Bloodstained which had finished at $5.54 million.

Shenmue 3

For those unaware, Shenmue 3 will act as a direct sequel to the first two games which were released for the Sega Dreamcast console back in 1999 and 2001. The series follows a teenage martial artist Ryo Hazuki who is searching his father’s killer in 1980s China.

It has been developed by the legendary Yu Suzuki who will be onboard as a director and a producer for the third entry. PC and PS4 are the only two platforms chosen by the developers for the launch of Shenmue 3. It will be built using the Unreal Engine 4 technology, and will of course feature just single-player gameplay.

As for its release, it has been predicted that Shenmue 3 will be ready for its outing on the PS4 and PC in December 2017. But as is the case with most Kickstarter-funded games, delays are very likely to be faced by it.
