You won’t see a new Portal this Christmas, says Valve’s Doug Lombardi

One of the games that stood out last year was Portal, the key reason being that it had an amazing and an innovative gameplay. Naturally gamers who played the action game are keenly waiting for a new Portal game but looks like that’s not going to happen anytime soon. Doug Lombardi from Valve has said that there will not be a new Portal this year.

No Portal

Doug Lombardi is the vice president of marketing at Valve. He spoke to Eurogamer.nethe stated, “In typical Valve tradition, it won’t be Portal with different colors. I think that when you hit something like that, you have two choices: you can quickly replicate it and stick it out there – do the opportunistic thing and cash in on it; or you can do the crazy thing like we did after Half-Life was so successful and go off and try and say, ‘Okay, that was revolutionary, so its successor has to be equally as revolutionary. That’s the spirit I think we’re approaching it in. You won’t see a new Portal at retail this Christmas because of that.”

Lombardi mentioned that people do want more but Valve won’t give them more of the same as it would just be boring. The original Portal was more of an experiment. The Valve boss said that one has to be ambitious and Half-Life 2 cost more than forty million dollars but it paid off for them. So just how long would it take to develop a new portal game, well right now your guess is as good as ours.
