I Really Regret Saying That: Cooper Lawrence on Mass Effect Fiasco

Most gamers are not bibliophiles, but from the last few days they have been interested in one particular book – The Cult of Perfection: Making Peace With Your Inner Overachiever. And why the sudden interest in the book? Well, the author, one Cooper Lawrence criticized the Xbox 360 game Mass Effect on a debate on Fox News.

Mass Effect

Nothing is wrong in criticizing a game, but Lawrence did it without actually playing Mass Effect! This was not taken lightly by the gamers as most of them swarmed on Amazon and gave lots of negative reviews as well as low ratings to the book. Many gamers even put tags such as garbage, hypocrisy, ignorant and hack. The Cult of Perfection: Making Peace With Your Inner Overachiever was also attacked on the Barnes & Noble website by the gamers.

However, Cooper Lawrence has now accepted that she regretted saying those things about Mass Effect. She told NY Times, “I recognize that I misspoke. I really regret saying that, and now that I’ve seen the game and seen the sex scenes it’s kind of a joke. Before the show I had asked somebody about what they had heard, and they had said it’s like pornography. But it’s not like pornography. I’ve seen episodes of ‘Lost’ that are more sexually explicit.”

The Mass Effect issue has got a lot of attention. There has been a lot of bad blood between Electronic Arts as well as Fox News. Nevertheless, gamers would be happy that Ms. Lawrence has accepted her mistake.
