Resident Evil 5 Boss Speaks about African Setting

Besides the raging debates on the violence and sex in video games, one more topic that has garnered a lot of views from columnists and the gamers themselves is that of race. There is a lot of controversy for the African setting in Resident Evil 5. But now Jun Takeuchi has explained why they chose Africa as setting for RE 5.

Jun Takeuchi is the chief producer of Resident Evil 5. He spoke with Famitsu and explained, “We settled on the fact that we really wanted to show the origins of the virus. So for the setting we thought, how about the place where humankind was born? Well, I’m not a scientist, so I don’t know how things might change in the future, but we thought we would use Africa, which is now called the birthplace of humanity, as the model.”

Takeuchi also said that many a Western developers have made use of light as a pattern in their games. He indicated that they were exploring all types of weather conditions and passages of time to combine things up. They used the sun-drenched desert village settings to capitalize on the lighting system that emulates the eyes.
