If Gears of War was listed on the share markets, all investors would have made millions, if not billions by now. The game reached another milestone, Microsoft has just sent out word that Gears of War has sold over 3 million copies. Two weeks ago, Microsoft had released two new maps, Raven Down and Old Bones on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The maps also reached a milestone, as gamers downloaded around 750,000 of them.
Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing, Interactive Entertainment Business Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft Corp says, “Like blockbuster titles from Microsoft’s ‘Halo’ franchise and the ‘Grand Theft Auto’ and ‘Zelda’ franchises, ‘Gears of War’ is tracking to be one of the best-selling video games of all time and has established itself as the most successful new IP of the next generation.”
Gears of War was the highest selling game in 2006 and had crossed the 2 million mark in mid-December 2006. I have a feeling that Gears of War will cross the 5 million by March. But by then Halo 3 will release, what remains to be seen is, will Halo 3 slow down Gears of War sales or whether Gears of War will affect Halo 3.
