Two iconic gaming characters namely Mario and Sonic have been roped in by Sega to feature in a brand new title of the sporting kind. The dynamic duo will soon be seen starring together in the company’s new offering dubbed as Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The game is slated to unveil across the Nintendo Wii as well as the newly-released 3DS.

The 3DS version is expected to house more than 50 original Olympic themed events complete with single as well as multiplayer modes. The race for the much-coveted gold, silver and bronze medals is on. The portable version is slated to feature unique control systems as well as vibrant 3D visuals without the need to employ 3D glasses.
“Mario and Sonic have had a phenomenally successful partnership and we are extremely proud to be able to recreate this once again with Nintendo and ISM for the London 2012 Olympic Games,” stated Naoya Tsurumi, Chairman for Sega of America and Sega Europe. “It is truly exciting to be in the position to develop interactive entertainment software titles based on the Olympic Games, and for Sonic and Mario to once again be a part of this historic event.”
“The London 2012 Olympic Games will be a sporting showcase that will embrace the world and we are delighted to have Mario and Sonic competing once again, this time in the largest number of Olympic sports ever,” revealed Raymond Goldsmith, Chairman & CEO of ISM.
“These games bring together two of the most beloved characters in the history of the video game industry in Mario and Sonic,” explained Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “As veterans of both video games and Olympic games, they’ll arrive in London as a formidable team to provide fun, competitive sporting activities that friends and family members can enjoy together.”
Coming to the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, the company claims to infuse the title with many new headline events which include football and equestrian. Besides these events, Wii owners will be able to indulge in other classic Olympic events like aquatics, table tennis and athletics. There is also a new array of Dream events that feature Sonic and Mario world backdrops. Gamers can enjoy the embedded titles in either single or multiplayer modes.
Although Sonic and Mario are already on their way to London as Sega suggests, the company hasn’t yet disclosed too many other details pertaining to Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. This would include the official launch dates and pricing details as well. Nintendo and Wii owners can look forward to more revelations later this year.
