PSP Redesign Confirmed by Sony Computer Entertainment UK Head

Two rumors about the Sony PSP were doing rounds on the Internet. One was that there would be a PSP 2 while the other one was that PSP would have a smaller version. It turns out that the latter one is true. GamesIndustry.biz is reporting that SCE UK head Ray Maguire confirmed this during the PSP in Education initiative launch.

PSP Redesign Confirmed

Ray Maguire said that the PSP, which is available now, is only the first iteration and a smaller, lighter version of the PlayStation Portable is in the works. He also assured that the any modifications to the industrial design would not change the size of PSP’s screen. The handheld’s screen is one of the reasons why it has been so successful.

However, the best thing about the lighter PSP would be the price as there is a possibility it could cost lesser than the original PSP. Sony is certainly hoping to do what Nintendo did with the DS, as when they introduced DS Lite, it turned out to be very, very popular with the gamers.

Sony still has not released any more details regarding the ‘lighter’ PSP. In fact a Sony spokesperson said that Mr. Maguire was merely referring to Sony’s general strategy regarding console development. Well, all this points out to one thing, there will be a smaller, lighter version of the PSP. Keep watching this space for more details.
