Why Europeans Get Games after the US, Explains SCEE Boss

It’s not just Indian gamers that have to deal with delayed game releases. Most of the times gamers in Europe get new games only after they have been launched in the United States. Now Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss, David Reeves has explained why and pointed out that there is not enough encouragement for developers to work on numerous language translations during development of a game.

David Reeves spoke to Eurogamer.net and said, “Well some developers would say they can do (translations during initial development). Talk to Ted Price at Insomniac and he builds it in at the beginning. We are trying to educate all our developers to do that but it’s something that’s going to take a while. But even if you talk to Guerrilla, Namco, Square Enix, they all do it in English to begin with and then think about localisation later. You’re absolutely right, we should do it at the beginning. But they look at it like, ‘How much can I get for a Dutch version of the game.”

Reeves mentioned that they would like to ‘go day and date’ with some titles in North America as well as Europe and it would be easy for them to do it in the UK. However, he feels that if they released it first in the UK, then gamers in other European countries would call him biased!
