Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) and Sony Corporation (Sony) have sent word that Ken Kutaragi, who is known as the Father of PlayStation, will retire from his executive position at SCEI on June 19, 2007, when the annual shareholders’ meeting will take place.
Ken Kutaragi, Chairman and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc says, “I am happy to graduate from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. after introducing four platforms to the PlayStation family. It has been an exciting experience to change the world of computer entertainment by marrying cutting edge technologies with creative minds from all over the world. I’m looking forward to building on this vision in my next endeavors.”
Kazuo Hirai, who is the President & Group COO of SCEI will now become the President & Group CEO and will continue his responsibility as the leader of the PlayStation business worldwide. However, that does not mean that Ken Kutaragi will leave not be associated with Sony. He will continue to support Sir Howard Stringer, as senior technology advisor.

Many analysts were predicting that Kutaragi would step down soon as the PS3 did not do well as it was expected to do. Also, the Xbox 360 and Wii are now dominating the next-gen console market. Ken Kutaragi’s retirement from his executive position at SCEI will be an end of an era for Sony.
