Sony Sued over Cell Chip

This must be the zillionth time that Sony must have been sued over a patent! GameSpot is reporting that California based Parallel Processing Corporation has filed a suit against Sony over the parallel processing Cell chip that powers the mighty PS3.

Sony Sued Over Cell

The short five-page complaint was filed on July 26, 2007. Parallel Processing has cited in the suit that a patent for ‘synchronized parallel processing with shared memory’ was approved on October 8, 1991. It was assigned to International Parallel Machines of New Bedford, Massachusetts originally, but Parallel Processing claims that they are the ‘exclusive licensee’.

The suit was filed in the Eastern District of Texas (Tyler Division) and states that Sony products including the PS3 infringe upon its patent. But it fails to mention which of the patent’s claims Sony is infringing upon. It also claims that, “…the company’s actions ‘are causing irreparable harm and monetary damage to the company.” Parallel Processing Corporation now demands that all of Sony products that infringe on the patent should be impounded and destroyed. Oh yes, they also seek damages and attorney’s fees with interest from Sony.

Sony has refused to comment on this Cell chip lawsuit by Parallel Processing Corporation as it’s their policy not to comment on pending litigation. It seems that Sony is in huge trouble these days and now they have to face litigations over patents.
