Next Witcher Game May or May Not have Multiplayer, CD Projekt RED Clarifies Rumors

It all began when a job listing on the website of CD Projekt RED was spotted seeking candidates for the role of a ‘Multiplayer Programmer’ required to work on an RPG in a dark fantasy world (possibly The Witcher 3) and the dev’s new game based on Cyberpunk. Mentioning that such a design is still in its ‘idea stage,’ the studio’s head of marketing, Michal Platkow-Gilewski has clarified that the new recruit will help the team understand the possibilities of multiplayer in these games.

While talking to Eurogamer, Platkow-Gilewski told the website that the job position on the CD Projekt RED website which started the speculations should have been named Multiplayer/Online Programmer. He also declared that it’s ‘way too early’ to talk about what the hired person will be creating. One of the ‘Responsibilities’ mentioned on the job listing page was that of creating a roadmap of changes that are necessary to add multiplayer to the developer’s proprietary RED Engine.

“We want to bring to the team someone experienced in this field to evaluate our concepts and ideas. He will be one of backbone elements of our R&D. We believe that there’s still a lot of space for innovation in the RPG genre. At this stage of our games’ development, we want to explore all possible directions, check what would be cool, what’s feasible and – always the most important for us – what suits our games the best,” Michal Platkow-Gilewski, CD Projekt RED’s head of marketing, told the website.

Another responsibility for this post is that of preparing the developer’s engine for the challenges of upcoming online components in its future games. Helping in creating a design and implementation of multiplayer alterations to existing systems is also one of the job profile points stated in the listing.

Whatever the plans are, CD Projekt RED doesn’t seem to be in the mood to reveal them. Meanwhile, the wait continues for The Witcher 3 and the game based on Cyberpunk, which are scheduled to launch on next-gen consoles and PC in 2014 and 2015, respectively.
