It’s official; the next chapter in the FFXIII saga will be called Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and will be out for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013. Revealed at the 25th anniversary event of the Final Fantasy franchise in Tokyo, this game will act as a concluding episode to the FFXIII series.

Square Enix will be developing and publishing it, and the company has disclosed that the new game will enable players to assume direct control of Lightning, who was the protagonist of FFXIII and a critical character in FFXIII-2. This title has been confirmed to feature constantly moving and expansive environments. It will ask gamers to embark upon a quest to save a fated world from complete destruction.
Producer Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, exclaimed, “We are pleased to reveal that Lightning is returning as the playable character in this title, and are excited to see how fans react to the more direct battle system and expansive environment that can be explored at will.”
A fresh battle system will be deployed into the game, while a number of new techniques will be granted to Lightning for combat as well as for exploring the environments. Square Enix has even announced that a ”˜unique’ feature which will link the in-game world to the real world will be introduced by the title.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is due for release in 2013. FFXIII came out in 2010 and grabbed an Overall score of 8.2/10 in our review, while FFXIII-2 was released last year, and managed to score 8/10.
