Horizon Series Could Very Well Be A Trilogy

Horizon Forbidden West

Zero Dawn and Forbidden West were both well-received Horizon games and it seems there will be a third one as well, to complete the trilogy. Mathijs de Jong, the creative director on the first two games, has explicitly mentioned a “next game” while discussing the cliffhanger ending of the recently released entry to the series.

He was speaking to VG247 about the narrative threads at the end of Horizon Forbidden West when he said, “…this game ends with another big cliffhanger, where we’re setting up some things for the next game once again.” The first game also had a similar ending, which paved the way for the sequel eventually.

However, this still doesn’t count as an official announcement of the game. And don’t expect that to happen anytime soon as Horizon Forbidden West will likely get at least one big expansion in the months to come, just like Horizon Zero Dawn did in the form of The Frozen Wilds.

There’s another Horizon game in development as well, albeit for Sony’s upcoming PlayStation VR2 headset. Called Horizon Call of the Mountain, this game has been blessed with a short teaser of sorts but not many details about it are available. We do know that the PSVR 2 has a 2022 release planned so expect the game to arrive this year as well.

The Horizon series has seen huge success since its launch with Zero Dawn back in 2017. As of February this year, the game has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. As for Forbidden West, which came out two months back, it has received a great response from players and critics alike.

Let us now wait and watch if there’s any further discussion on a potential Horizon Forbidden West sequel in the time to come.
