Starting this August, a new feature called Steam Greenlight will be introduced, involving gamers in the process of selecting games to be launched through the service in the future. This process will have developers posting information, screenshots, videos and even builds of their titles on Steam, while community support will finally decide whether or not the games get chosen for distribution.

Besides, Greenlight will even help game-makers receive feedback from potential buyers. This will in turn enable them to start creating active communities around their titles anytime during the development process. Valve has mentioned that the number of votes needed to get a game selected is still to be decided. That’s because the company is yet to know how much traffic will be generated by the new feature.
“Over the many years that Steam has been selling games, the release rate of games on Steam has continued to grow significantly. But given Steam’s existing technological pipeline for releasing games, there’s always been a reliance on a group of people to make tough choices on which games to not release on Steam. There are titles that have tied up this internal greenlight group in the past, and we knew there had to be a better way,” read an address to the community by Steam.
It has been revealed by Valve that even game concepts or early builds will be allowed to be posted on Greenlight. This way, community members will get a chance to play developer versions of the titles and decide their fates. Developers can either choose PC or Mac as the platforms for the games they will be submitting for review.
Steam Greenlight will be launched on the digital delivery service by the end of August.
