StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Hits the 1 Million Sales Milestone on Day One

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is developed by Blizzard Entertainment and is noted to be a sci-fi real-time strategy game. The much-awaited title made its way into stores strewn across various countries on July 27, 2010. The game was extremely well-received by players and according to the company, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty sold over 1 million copies on the first day itself earning it the title of the bestselling PC game launch of 2010.

Late last month, the game unfurled across various places worldwide such as North America, South Korea, Europe, New Zealand, Russia, Australia, Argentina, Brazil and Hong Kong among others. The acclaimed title hit these regions simultaneously with Blizzard Entertainment developers also being present at different locations to sign copies of the title.

“We launched StarCraft II in 11 different languages and on 5 different continents because we wanted to make sure as many players as possible were able to log on and play on day one,” stated Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re pleased that so many people around the world have already picked up a copy of the game, and we look forward to welcoming even more players to Battle.net in the weeks and months ahead.”

The sequel StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty comes complete with a 3D-graphics engine which perfectly compliments the events that take place between the protoss, zerg and terrans with each of these sides boasting of new unit types. Online play is also offers StarCraft II via a new version of Battle.net service which includes new features like leagues and ladders, voice communication, cloud file storage, achievements and more.

“GameStop had more than 3,000 stores open at midnight, so our StarCraft players got a jump start on playing the epic experience Blizzard consistently delivers with its games,” revealed Bob McKenzie, senior vice president of merchandising at GameStop. “StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is officially GameStop’s fastest-selling PC game since Blizzard launched World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King in 2008.”

The solo campaign of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty picks up from where the events in StarCraft: Brood War left off. Gamers will be able to adorn the role of marshal-turned-rebel-leader Jim Raynor while also interacting with new heroes as well as familiar faces. They can opt for their own mission path and research upgrades for the 29-mission campaign. The game also features loads of challenge-mode mini-games.

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is currently available for the PC and there is quite a possibility that Blizzard would bring the game to consoles as well.
