Intel and AMD team up to take on Nvidia

Intel and AMD have officially joined hands in an attempt to kick graphics giant Nvidia in the kaboose with a gaming processor of their own. The two are intending to introduce into the market a new Intel Core CPU with a custom AMD graphics chip. The product is aimed at gamers who like to keep it mobile with top tier laptops instead of traditional desktops.

As it is, PC sales have been suffering lately. The only bright spot is the 2-in-1 and skinny notebook segment which continues to grow. So it makes sense for Intel and AMD to steer in this direction. The upcoming chip will be part of the 8th Gen Intel Core series, featuring a high performance Core H-series processor, HBM2 and AMD Radeon graphics in a small package.

The second generation HBM2, or High Bandwidth Memory, technology used in the CPU is said to devour much less power when pitted against conventional options available in the market today. It also takes up way less room. With the new chip, Intel is even promising enhanced thermal dissipation so your laptop doesn’t get overheated while you’re busy banging away on it.

The highlight of the unnamed processor is Intel’s use of its homegrown Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB) architecture to hook up some, if not all, of the parts in the forthcoming product. It implements bits of silicon instead of circuit board traces to connect the various components of the CPU, eventually saving space as well as reducing energy consumption.

If you want the full breakdown of the technology that’s going into the Intel-AMD chip and what it means for mobile gaming, AnandTech has posted an excellent write-up of the details. Check it out.
