PS3 achieves major milestone, 80 million units sold

The PS3 console has just been announced by Sony to have sold more than 80 million units worldwide till date. Having received two redesigns, the machine has played host to a total number of 4,332 games as of November 2, 2013. Sony’s revelation comes just weeks before the launch of the PS3’s successor which is set to once again ignite the console war, and herald the start of a new generation in gaming.

Released back in 2006, the console is roughly seven years old now, and has seen a number of big games being launched for it, the most recent ones being BioShock Infinite, The Last of Us and GTA V, all three of which have gone on to set sales records in some way or the other. Moreover, its maker has announced that over 300 games are set to be released by third-party developers and publishers as well as by Sony itself during this holiday season. This includes the much anticipated Gran Turismo 6 which has surprisingly chosen to skip being a PS4 launch title.

The PS3’s fierce competitor, the Xbox 360 breached the 80 million sales mark last month. And considering the fact that Microsoft had launched its console a year prior to Sony, the latter does appear to have taken a considerable leap in popularity. However, sales of these two console are still stunted in comparison with the Nintendo Wii which has surprisingly sold off a whopping 100 million units worldwide.

Sony has surely ensured that even as we enter the new generation of gaming, the PS3 does not lose its relevance so fast. And the 300 games it has brewing up for the machine right now are evidence to the fact.
