Given the massive popularity that Rocket League has been enjoying for years and given the growing number of mainstream online games taking the mobile route, one could have expected the vehicular soccer game to land on iOS and Android earlier, but it’s happening now nonetheless. Rocket League Sideswipe is the mobile spin-off that will hit iOS and Android devices later this year. But not everyone will have to wait that long; those in Australia and New Zealand can now participate in a limited-time closed alpha test via the Google Play Store.
Developer Psyonix has already confirmed that Rocket League Sideswipe will be a free-to-play offering, which is not a surprise since the original game also took the same route last year. Sideswipe is being built from the ground up for mobile and you can expect a large number of changes to make it fit for the new platform. Firstly, the matches will only be 2 minutes long and will be played from a side-on perspective. The number of players will also fall down, as only 1v1 or 2v2 matches will be allowed.
“Rocket League Sideswipe will feature mobile controls that are easy to pick up whether you’re a master of Rocket League or a new player still learning your way around the field. Plus, there are advanced mechanics, just like Rocket League, for those who want to climb the Competitive Ranks. In the garage, Rocket League Sideswipe will have robust car customization similar to Rocket League. Players can also expect an online Ranking system for competitive play. We have a lot more to reveal about the game in the coming months as we get closer to release,” said the Psyonix team in a blog post.
As we said, Rocket League Sideswipe will be hitting iOS and Android later this year, while a soft alpha launch is already underway in Australia and New Zealand.
