Sony’s PS3 to Win Current Game Console Battle: Strategy Analytics

There is an ongoing console war which Nintendo has been edging for some time now with its casual gaming platform. But according to Strategy Analytics, Sony’s PS3 console will sell more units than its rivals during the lifetime of the current generation. The report predicts that the PS3 will still be going strong five years after the Wii has been replaced, and lifetime sales of the PS3 are expected to stand at 127 million when compared to those of the Wii which are predicted to be 103 million.

PS3 to Win Console War

“Nintendo has done a great job with the Wii in bringing console games to new audiences,” David Mercer, Principal Analyst and report author said. “But its sales are now falling, particularly in mature markets, and its installed base will peak in 2011. Ownership of both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will hit their highest points between 2012 and 2014.”

This report also predicts a 9 percent decrease in worldwide TV game console sales in the year 2010. Predicted sales figures are 14 million for the PS3, 10.5 million for the Xbox 360, 17.5 million for the Wii, and 5.5 million for the PS2 in 2010.

“Console industry cycles have given the industry major planning challenges for many years,” Mercer added. “There are signs that this volatility may be moderating as platforms add home entertainment and social networking services beyond pure gaming.”

Estimations from Strategy Analytics suggest that ownership of current system will peak in 2011, and the global installed base of consoles should touch 220 million by the end of the year.
