Halo 3: ODST Unplayable due to Disc Read Error on some Consoles

Halo 3: ODST has just been released and follows human UNSC soldiers known as Orbital Drop Shock Troopers or ODST, instead of the usual Master Chief. The game was highly anticipated, Halo 3 having been released almost two years earlier. And on the Bungie forums, there are already many users reporting disc read errors with the Halo 3: ODST game discs, rendering the game unplayable.

Apparently the disc read errors are only prevalent on older Xbox 360 consoles, or rather on consoles with older DVD drives. The same “unplayable” ODST discs seem to be perfectly fine when played on newer consoles. Also, it seems that the disc read error only affect the disc which is home to the Campaign and the Firefight modes, and not the multiplayer disc.

There are also many suggestions on the official Bungie forums, on how to solve the problem ranging from installing the game onto your hard drive, to the outrageous ‘boil your copy of the game’. As of now, there is no word from Bungie on what the issue is, what has caused it, and what can be done to fix it.
