Today marks the beginning of the development of Unreal Tournament. This is quite unusual since games are usually announced way after their development begins. But Epic Games has taken a new approach to the process by revealing that this title will be handled by a small team of UT veterans who will be developing it in an extremely open manner, in conjunction with UT fans, other Epic employees as well as Unreal Engine 4 devs. Needless to say which engine will be powering the game.

Forums and Twitch streams will allow regular participation of the involved parties, whereas all the generated code will be made available via GitHub. As for the question of how Epic will earn money from it, the company has disclosed that Unreal Tournament will later receive a marketplace a where developers, modders, artists and gamers will be allowed to buy and sell mods and content. Revenue from this will be divided between owners of the content and Epic.

Unreal Tournament will be released for PC, Mac and Linux platforms, but do not expect the final product to be ready any time soon. Epic has said that it’ll take months for an alpha version to hit the block which means the actual game should very well be marked for a 2015 release.
