Halo Reach ViDoc: Hidden Details Uncovered, Includes Special Badass Elites

A few days ago, the world got its first peak into the breathing world of Reach which was constructed to showcase the most poignant game being developed by Bungie to this date. The developer walkthrough showcased numerous details regarding the structure of the game, its size and scale on various levels. The video also showed us a lot of hidden details into the world of Reach that are currently in development.

Halo Reach ViDoc Analysis

Right in the beginning when Marcus Letho starts to describe the dates for the campaign structure of Reach we can see a lot of details from what can be assumed the very first mission of the game. There are a number of post-its stuck on a white board that detail these fiddling and juicy details about the mission.

Here is a brief low-down of the list of things you may have missed in the video:

1:13 – (From left to right) Carter orders you into position and pushes the player (Noble 6) into a basic combat training course. This is followed by an ambush and Elite vs Spartans “Limited Non-linear Patrol Encounter.” The set of Elites include a “special class of Badass Elites” along with Jackals with shields and a pack of grunts waiting to hunt down the player. The next set of post-its showcases the set of weapons that the players and the enemies wield during this encounter.

1:14 – There is an assault rifle, magnum, plasma pistol and frag grenades which will be used in combat. This section also tells us about the new first set of new vehicles in the game along with the introduction of a new character “The Jackal Skirshmer”.

1:15 – Also details out a variety of weapons and the battle sequences. These include
Magnum, Plasma Carbine and an energy shield followed by the grenade types that are present in combat an interesting addition to which is a “caltrop grenade.”

Looking at the definition of caltrop we find that it is: “Tropical annual procumbent poisonous subshrub having fruit that splits into five spiny nutlets; serious pasture weed.” This reminds us of the spike grenades which had similar properties of sticking to enemies and splitting when exploding.

Two vehicles also appear in these lists: The Falcon and the Ghost are to lend support for the respective teams. The Spartans also find using the new gun which was showcased in the latter half of the video called the mortar launcher.

The next set of post-its decodes activities from another mission on the game. This is also shown to quite a large extent in the video. This is a night time mission which involves wraiths, anti aircraft wraiths and other covenant artillery pieces that are destroying the human fleet which is dropping like meteors from the sky. The next section features a lot of blurred stuff but has some information on ODSTs helping out Spartans in the battle. This section also places emphasis on the return of the Brutes, specifically “The Brute Captain” and the Jet-pack elites.

2:45 – Tells us that this night-time mission will have the presence of rain in it. We can see droplets of water falling from the sky as the covenant patrol ship hovers over our head.

3:09 – The date of progress in the game, sections in this ViDoc were pretty recent. The voice recording clip tells us that this section was being worked upon last month, 1/19/2010 to be precise.

5:42 – The return of the night vision goggles from ODST. This is the very same level that is being displayed through the rest of the developer walkthrough, the only difference being there is a slight grain filter in this sequence which is the result of switching on night vision by the player.

6:52 – The melee death animations are performed by a knife that Noble Six wields in the game (a la Call of duty)

That’s what we could figure out from the Vid-Doc. Feel free to drop in a line if you saw something that we missed out in those quick and snappy shots from the walkthrough.
