It is an episode-based title which has its main focus on tailoring the narrative based on the decisions you make at several important points during your journey through zombie-infested America, thus adding a role-playing flavor to the whole affair. The next pick on our compilation takes place in a futuristic setting – the year 2228 to be precise – wherein humans have settled upon other planets.

A former assassin named Azriel Odin is searching for his lost brother in a world controlled by a space mafia organization dubbed Boryokudan. Amongst all the other things, you’ll first notice the retro pixilated graphics which give the game its unique looks. But the most enjoyable bits are hidden in its challenging puzzles and occasional plot twists.

Machinarium

Machinarium tells the adorable tale of a small robot who has been flung into a scrap yard, and who must now confront evil androids from the Black Cap Brotherhood in order to save his robot girlfriend.

It comprises complex puzzles which are accompanied by beautiful steampunk visuals that don’t waste much time to grab your imagination. Developed by Amanita Design, this game has made its way to platforms like PC, Mac, Linux, iPad, Android, BlackBerry PlayBook, and will soon be seen landing on PSN as well.

4 – Yesterday

Yesterday

A series of homeless people in New York are disappearing one after another, only to be later found dead. Just then, Y-shaped scars start appearing on the hands of random people. The dark and gritty Yesterday tells the story of a young philanthropist, Henry White and his friend Cooper who start investigating the matter, and are joined by the inscrutable John Yesterday who is suffering from a wiped memory.

These are the three playable characters in this game which has a total of 4 different endings. Released for PC in March this year, Yesterday comes from developer Pendulo Studios which gave us wonderful titles from the Runaway series.

5 – Sam & Max Complete Pack

Three seasons with sixteen episodes of pure Sam & Max fun is what’s on offer with this complete pack being sold on Steam currently. This series by Telltale Games based on comics of the same name, has landed in our roster owing to the utterly engrossing gameplay it has been endowed with.

Sam is a six-foot dog, while Max is a rabbit, and together, these New York detectives travel all over the world so as to solve cases and fight crimes. Each season can be purchased separately, but we recommend you buy the complete pack through Steam, as you’ll be saving a huge amount thus.

6 – Botanicula

Botanicula

Like Machinarium, Botanicula is another game by Amanita Design which touches you in a mysterious way. Its story involves characters named Mr. Lantern, Mr. Twig, Mr. Poppy Head, Mr. Feather and Mrs. Mushroom, who’re striving to preserve their natural habitat. Players are needed to control them while exploring the environments, solving puzzles and collecting stuff that is required for overcoming barriers.

But the most appealing part of this title is its mesmerizing visuals and its absorbing gameplay, which make it a worthy addition to our catalog. It is available to purchase for PC, Mac, Linux and iPad.

7 – To the Moon

To the Moon

To the Moon is an indie game which deserves all the praise that it gets. Its story is set in a world wherein it’s possible to alter memories. The touching tale involves Dr. Wyatt and Dr. Rosaleane, who set out to change the memories of a dying man whose only wish was to land on moon. Along with adventure elements, it also kicks in inventive role-playing gameplay which is accompanied by 16-bit graphics.

Also praiseworthy is the game’s music which captures every mood with utmost efficiency. To the Moon is currently only available for PC through developer Freebird Games’ official site.

8 – Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP

If you think the name is unique, wait till you play the game. Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP is an amalgam of enchanting art and action adventure gameplay which manages to leave a lasting impression on you.

There are abstract puzzles for you to solve, unique environments to explore, a simple combat system, a neat magic system and to top it all off, its minimalistic pixel art is something which you can never quite have enough of. This game is an indie masterpiece, and is highly recommended by us for fans of all genres. It can be bought now for PC and Mac through Steam.
