PUBG to enter esports realm with $2 million tournament

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, or PUBG as it’s popularly known, is all set to enter the mainstream esports realm with a $2 million tournament that’s supposed to take place this summer. It will have 20 professional teams battle it out in Berlin, Germany from July 25 to July 29.

Titled PUBG Global Invitational 2018 (PGI 2018), this event will of course be the first such global level tournament to be held by developer PUBG Corp. It will be a great spectacle for fans from around the world to watch the streams featuring the best players.

The makers have announced that the teams will be selected by PUBG Corp via qualifying tournaments in North America, Europe and Asia. Different events will be held for first person and third person perspectives, moreover. Showcasing the potential of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds as an esports title is the main reason behind this invitational.

The game has been around since its beta days in March last year, and has now grown into one of the most popular online games in the world. It embraces the battle royale genre, and has up to 100 players parachuting onto a map, scavenging for weapons and equipment, and trying not to get killed during all this. There is a constantly sinking safe area at the middle of the map which increases the difficulty furthermore.

This title was first released for PC via Steam’s Early Access program, and then made its way onto the Xbox One in December last year. PUBG is now also available on Android and iOS.

Additional details about the PUBG invitational tournament including ticket sales, regional qualifiers and venue are to be revealed in the coming weeks.
