Ubisoft has disclosed that Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag has been under development since the last two years. Its major duties are being handled by the company’s Montreal office, but studios in Annecy, Bucharest, Kiev, Quebec, Singapore and Sofia are also contributing towards this ambitious title. The new game’s story is all set to focus on Edward Kenway, who happens to be the grandfather of AC 3 protagonist, Connor.

This young British man has been described as an adventurer who enters the realm of piracy during the end of wars between major Empires, and quickly finds himself entangled within the Assassin-Templar conflict. The game will take place at the start of the 18th century in the West Indies, and keeping with the series’ famous knack, will feature historical characters as well. This time around, they will come in the form of infamous pirates like Blackbeard and Charles Vane.

Not much has come to the fore regarding its gameplay, but one can expect Ubisoft to follow its traditional pattern by revealing new components on a regular basis during the months leading up to the title’s launch. What we know as of now is that the game will kick in open world environments, with over 50 navigable locations having been infused into it. Its combat will combine the traditional gears of assassins with the weaponry used during the era it’s set in. Moreover, a multiplayer component has also been revealed to form part of the game.

Its PS4 and PS3 versions will be instilled with 60 minutes worth of additional content that won’t form part of the Xbox 360, PC and Wii U variants.
