Saw to be Konami’s Second Horror Franchise?

Konami has bought the rights to bankrupt developer Brash’s video game ‘Saw’ and has said that with this survival horror title, it is looking to equal its longtime running psychological thriller, Silent Hill. Recently there were rumors on Silent Hill: Shattered Memories coming to the Wii.

Director of Marketing for Konami, David Daniels explains to Variety, “Because we have leadership in the survival horror genre, we a’re passionate about it and wanted to find another property on par with ‘Silent Hill’. ‘Saw’ has grossed over $600 million worldwide and sold over 28 million DVDs, so we felt like it was a great opportunity to align ourselves with one of the most successful horror film franchises in history.”

When Brash went bankrupt last fall, the rights for the game Saw were back in the hands of Lionsgate, who turned down the opportunity to produce. Konami then picked up the rights and stuck with developer Zombie to finish the game, under its direction.

We hear that the plot of the game will be original, every now and then dipping into but not directly taking anything from the films. The game will be focusing on the Jigsaw’s characteristic traps which are turned into puzzles for the game. Players are in an asylum and must decide whether and how to solve the puzzles to save Jigsaw’s victims.

“‘Silent Hill’ is more about psychological terror, but ‘Saw’ for us is more about graphic, intense horror that overwhelms you,” said Daniels. “We want players to turn away from the screen for just a moment because of the visual intensity.”

The game, Saw, is set to be released for the PS3, PC and Xbox 360 this fall, in order to coincide with the release of Lionsgate’s Saw VI. Apparently, actor Tobin Bell, who plays Jigsaw in the movies, will be lending his voice to the game.
