New Portable Sales Record set by Nintendo DS Family Last Month

The Nintendo DS made waves across the gaming terrain back in 2004 while a Lite version of the same unveiled two years later. Last year saw the introduction of the new Nintendo DSi portable game console. Although home consoles like Xbox 360 and PS3 are seen still gathering many accolades, the portable DS devices however are not left too far behind.

DS Sales Records

In the month of February alone, there were over 613,000 units of the Nintendo DS family sold in the US. With these numbers, the gaming systems have achieved a new record for portable video game sales. As the NPD Group suggests, the total number exceeds February last year’s 597,000 units set by the same console family itself. Another Nintendo system namely the Wii also saw a strong sales number as there were over 397,000 Wii systems sold last month. According to these statistics, customers have already brought 1.9 million Nintendo hardware consoles in this year.

“Here in its sixth year of availability, Nintendo DS continues to expand the appeal of video games. We expect the public’s appetite for these systems will grow even more when we introduce our new extra-large model, the Nintendo DSi XL, on March 28,” revealed Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.

The month of February witnessed three of the top five best-selling games slots being taken by the Nintendo systems. The acme position was stolen by New Super Mario Bros. Wii with over 555,000 sold. Next up was Just Dance from Ubisoft which sold over 275,000 and came in at the fourth position. Wii Sports Resort with the Wii MotionPlus accessory sold over 272,000 and hence bagged the fifth spot.
