PS3 Motion Pad by Sony: Break Apart or No Break Apart?

A few days ago, we had reported about Sony coming up with motion sensitive controller for the PlayStation 3. Sony was tight lipped about it. Now contradicting rumors have sprung up on the internet. Some point to a ‘break apart’ PS3 pad while some indicate that the PS3 motion controller will have a small device that could be attached to it.

Yesterday, video games news website GamesIndustry.biz reported that Sony Computer Entertainment could be working on a new controller for their next generation console. It will have the capability to ‘break apart’ into two different units. Both these two units would also have an accelerometer, which could have Wiimote-like motion-sensing functionality. In fact, prototypes of the PS3 motion pad have been sent to some developer partners.

However, gaming blog Kotaku has an article that says that the “break apart” controller for the PS3 may not be entirely true. An unnamed source from the industry has told them that the control system will in fact have a smaller-sized device, which can be attached to the body. There are multiple devices that can be used together. For example, putting two on the hands or even four on the limbs to move a character’s body.

As usual, Sony is mum about the “break pad” rumors. Is Sony really coming out with a Wiimote-like controller for the Wii?
